Human Trafficking

Line-art trauma-informed screening scene with an adult survivor patient, nurse, privacy screen, and resource navigation cues

This course reviews the definition, characteristics, and epidemiology of human trafficking and provides readers with strategies to identify, assess, and address cases of human trafficking. While almost 90% of human trafficking survivors have contact with a healthcare provider during their abuse, most nurses do not have specific training in identifying these victims. After completing this course, readers will be better equipped to advocate for victims of human trafficking.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define human trafficking with the AMP model and differentiate between its various forms.
  2. Differentiate between human trafficking and human smuggling.
  3. Identify factors that place a person at higher risk of being a victim of human trafficking and describe characteristics that are common for perpetrators of human trafficking.
  4. Identify a validated tool for assessing possible cases of human trafficking.
  5. List the hotlines for reporting human trafficking and describe social services available to victims.
